Stuck in London between 3am and 6am: what can you do?
On this page
The short answer
For most problems, plan for the 01:30 to 05:00 gap: use night buses, buy cold food from a 24-hour shop or petrol forecourt, and check stations or venues live. For medicine ring 111; in immediate danger or urgent medical emergency call 999.
This page is for one specific situation: you are in London, it is the small hours, and you cannot go anywhere yet.
It is not a list of things to do at night for fun — that is things to do in London at night. This is the problem-solving version. Find your situation below and follow it.
First, the one thing that makes everything else easier: the squeeze is roughly 01:30 to 05:00, and it is shorter than it feels. From about 05:00 the first trains run, stations reopen, cafés start serving and the hot-food licensing restriction lifts. If it is 04:15, you are nearly through it. Plan for the gap rather than for the whole night.
At a glance
| What you need | Where to go | |
|---|---|---|
| To get somewhere | Night buses, every night | Always |
| Somewhere warm indoors | 24h venue, open station, night bus | Check live |
| Hot food | Very limited before 05:00 | Not reliable |
| Cold food | 24h shops and forecourts | Usually |
| A toilet | Open stations, venues with a purchase | Usually |
| Medicine | Almost nothing open — ring 111 | Check live |
| Urgent medical help | 999 and A&E, any hour | Always |
| Left luggage | Staffed hours only, not overnight | Not reliable |
My flight landed early and I cannot check in yet
- Decide whether to stay at the airport or come into London. This is the real decision. Heathrow's own site says there is nowhere to sleep overnight in the terminal; Gatwick has paid YOTEL cabins in the South Terminal, four hours minimum. Check the airport's own current policy on the night — do not assume the terminal is yours until morning. Details and the overnight transport options are in London airports at night.
- If you travel in, know which service actually runs. Overnight coaches cover the gap when the trains do not, and the answer differs by airport.
- Do not count on left luggage overnight — those desks keep staffed hours. See left luggage in London.
- Eat before you move if you can. Terminals have more food at 3am than most of London does.
My train is not until the morning
- Check whether your station actually stays open. This is the assumption that catches people. Of the seven big Network Rail termini, only Victoria, Liverpool Street and Paddington are staffed round the clock; Euston, King's Cross, Waterloo and London Bridge have a gap of three or four hours with nobody on duty. The full hours are in where can you sit late at night. Confirm on the night, before the last train goes.
- If it closes, you need a plan for a few hours. The realistic options — and what each one costs you — are in where can you sit late at night.
- Sort a toilet and a phone charge early, while something is still open. Both get harder after midnight: finding a toilet at night.
- Buy food before 02:00. After that, cold food from a 24-hour shop is the reliable option.
I missed the last train
- Night buses run every night, on N-prefixed routes and around fifty 24-hour routes. This is the backbone and it is the cheapest answer. Start here, not with a taxi app.
- Check whether it is a Night Tube night. On Friday and Saturday several lines run through, which may get you most of the way home. Which lines run at night.
- A black cab is always an option, at a higher night tariff. Only get into a minicab you booked — a licensed cab is the one with the light. Getting home after the last train.
- Tell someone your route and keep your phone charged: getting home safely at night.
I need food
The rule that decides everything: hot food after 11pm needs a licence, cold food never does. So between 02:00 and 05:00 the dependable answer is a 24-hour shop or petrol forecourt, not a restaurant.
- Where to eat in London after midnight — the rules, the hour-by-hour picture and the genuine 24-hour handful
- Late-night cafés — and why a late café is usually a bar
- 24-hour supermarkets
From 05:00 the restriction lifts. At 04:30, waiting is a strategy.
I need medicine, or I am worried about someone
- Ring 111. Free, any hour. They can direct you to a pharmacy that is genuinely open and arrange an emergency supply of a regular medicine, including at night.
- Call 999 for chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding or an unresponsive person. A&E never closes.
- How to find a pharmacy open now — very few open overnight, and the NHS finder’s “open now” filter is the only current source
- Emergency dentist at night if it is dental
- Emergency vet at night if it is an animal — ring your own vet’s number, they are required to have cover
- Every number that answers overnight is on our emergency page
I just need somewhere indoors
There is no public right to sit indoors in London at night, so this is about knowing which category you are in and what it asks of you. A night bus is warm, lit, staffed and cheap, and is a better answer than most people expect.

The overnight squeeze
Bar height and the written word both carry the level, so this reads the same printed in black and white.
Friday and Saturday are materially easier than the rest of the week, because Night Tube runs and venues trade later.
What not to rely on
- That your station will be staffed. Four of the seven big termini are not, overnight.
- That the airport will let you sleep. Heathrow says there is nowhere to.
- A hotel lobby you are not staying in. The overnight service exemption covers guests, not the public.
- Left luggage. Staffed hours only.
- Hot food between 02:00 and 05:00. It needs a licence and very few hold one.
- “Open 24 hours” on a map listing. Often the business’s own unchecked claim, and often the shop’s hours rather than the kitchen’s.
- Your phone battery. Charge at every opportunity. Everything on this page assumes you can make a call.
What changes after midnight
- Tube service ends except on Night Tube nights and routes.
- Night buses become the public transport backbone — they run every night of the year.
- Restaurant kitchens close sharply, and hot food becomes a licensing question.
- Pharmacies become very hard to find; 111 is the route, not a search.
- Council toilets are shut, so stations and venues are what is left.
- Four of the seven big termini have no staff on duty for a few hours.
- From 05:00 it unwinds quickly — most of the above reverses inside ninety minutes.
If the real problem is that you have nowhere to sleep
Everything above assumes you are waiting for something. If you have no accommodation tonight, there is a proper route and it is not a café.
Your council must help if you are legally homeless, councils publish how to reach them out of hours, and Shelter’s free emergency helpline is 0808 800 4444. The details are in where can you sit late at night. If you are in immediate danger, call 999.
Those services exist for 3am. Ringing them is the right thing to do, not a last resort.
The one-line version
The gap is 01:30 to 05:00, and it is shorter than it feels. Night buses always run, cold food is always buyable, 111 and 999 always answer, and almost everything else needs checking on the night. Work out where you will sit and where the toilet is before midnight, and keep your phone charged.
