24-hour gyms in London: which ones, and what unstaffed hours actually mean
London now has 227 gyms open around the clock — more 24-hour gyms than 24-hour clubs. Which chains, how overnight entry works, and what nobody tells you about training in an empty building.
Here is a fact that says more about modern London than any nightlife guide: there are now more 24-hour gyms in this city than 24-hour clubs.
While late-licence venues closed — down to 58 with a 24-hour licence, from 91 in 2010 — the gyms quietly went the other way. The city did not stop being awake at 4am. It changed what it does with the hour.
The numbers
227 London gyms are open 24/7, across four chains:
| Chain | London gyms open 24/7 |
|---|---|
| PureGym | 83 |
| The Gym Group | 83 |
| Anytime Fitness | 59 |
| Buzz Gym | 2 |
That is roughly double the pre-pandemic figure, and it is why a 3am gym is now easier to find in London than a 3am pint.
The word that matters is "branch". A chain advertising itself as 24-hour does not mean your branch is. Some run shorter hours, and a few central sites close overnight entirely. Always check the specific gym's page, never the brand page. This is the same trap as every other "24-hour" chain claim.
How you actually get in at 3am
This is the part people are surprised by the first time.
Outside staffed hours, entry is by PIN or fob, not by a person. You let yourself in. There is usually nobody at the desk, and often nobody in the building except other members.
That arrangement is normal, legal and generally fine. But it has consequences worth knowing before you rely on it.
What “unstaffed” really means
- No induction, no spotter, no one to ask. If you have never used a piece of kit, 3am is not when to learn it.
- No one to notice. If something happens, the response depends on you, the emergency button, or another member being present.
- CCTV and a panic alarm, not a person. Both chains publish their unstaffed arrangements. Read yours before your first overnight visit, not during it.
- Access can be withdrawn. Some branches restrict overnight entry for new members, under-18s, or after incidents.
PureGym publishes an unstaffed-hours document for members, and recommends reading it before training overnight. That is a reasonable request and worth ten minutes.
Training alone at night — the practical bits
None of this is dramatic. It is the same common sense that applies to getting home safely, applied indoors.
- Tell someone, or leave your location shared for the session. Free, and it costs you nothing if all is well.
- Know where the emergency button is before you need it. Most unstaffed gyms have one. Find it on the way in.
- Drop the weight you would normally push. Failing a heavy lift alone is the single realistic risk in an empty gym. No spotter means no PB attempts.
- Use collars on barbells. Obvious, skipped constantly, and it is what turns a failed rep into an injury.
- Watch the car park, not just the gym. The gym is lit and covered. The walk to it at 4am may not be.
- Check the branch is genuinely staffed-free, not closed. A fob that worked last month is not a guarantee.
Who this is actually for
The overnight gym is not mainly for insomniacs. It is for shift workers — nurses, drivers, hospitality staff, security, anyone finishing at 2am who wants the same hour of training everyone else gets at six in the evening.
That is the honest social story here. London’s night-time economy lost its clubs and gained its gyms, and a large part of who uses them is the people who keep the city running while it sleeps.
Before you sign up
- Check the branch page, not the brand page. Hours are per site.
- Check whether overnight access costs more. Some tiers exclude it.
- Visit once in daylight. You want to know the layout before you are alone in it.
- Check the contract length. Several of these chains are no-contract; some tiers are not.
